A Step by Step Process to Repairing Your Tire

Many sharp objects can be lodged into your tire tread. Even though your tires can take a beating, they won’t maintain their pressure if something punctures them. Repairing a tire can be a long process because it needs to be patched in a secure way. If you need tire repair but don’t think you can perform it yourself, there is Big Apple Automotive in CA-18 which can repair your tires. If you do have the tools necessary and the willingness to fix your own tire, here is how.

You will need these items:

  • Pliers
  • Buffering solution
  • Sandpaper
  • Radial Tire Patch
  • Tire Chemical Sealant
  1. First, make sure your tire only has one puncture. If you ran over one sharp object, you could likely have run over more or on your other tires. You can check this by putting your tires in a tub of water with the air valve caps removed. The valve will bubble if there is a puncture. Once you have found the puncture, remove the nail or sharp object broken through the tread. Marking the area with some kind of color can help you easily find it while working on it. Take your tires off the rim if you haven’t already.
  2. Next, you’ll want to create a smooth area around the puncture by using a buffering solution and some sort of sandpaper surface to make the sealant fit smoothly.
  3. Then, unpackage your radial tire patch, which is a circular area connected to an a-line shape. Put the circular area on the inside of the tire, and feed the line through the puncture to the outside. Pull it as tightly as possible through the hole.
  4. Next, put the tire sealant solution around the string of the patch. Put as many coats as necessary until the puncture looks sealed. Cut the excess string of the patch with some pliers.
  5. Put some pressure on the inside of the tire where the circular patch area is to make sure it is tight. Then, put your tires back on the rims and put air back in the tires.
  6. If your tire has multiple punctures, it is not safe to do numerous patches next to each other. At that point, you should get a new tire.
